The best attributes of the $599 Oki Data C5200n are its text quality and its graphics printing speeds. The C5200n printed solid, crisp text, even producing closely spaced bold letters without bleeding together the edges, which is a common problem. On plain paper our color graphics had a rich, waxy appearance that exhibited some graininess but acceptable shadow detail. -PC World

The 3000cn printed text that looked crisp and was neither overly heavy nor too light. Even small fonts were easy to read. Line art looked almost perfect, and our grayscale test photograph displayed both sharp details and smooth tonal transitions. -PC World

Despite the name, the HP Deskjet 5940 Photo Printer ($99.99 direct) is best described as an all-purpose player: It can easily serve as a standard ink jet for text and graphics in a home or home office. But to justify the Photo Printer name, HP added a PictBridge connector for direct printing from cameras and lets you swap black- and photo-ink cartridges. Think of the 5940 as an all-purpose home printer with some photo conveniences. -PC Magazine

With a PictBridge connector for direct printing from cameras and support for six color inks to enhance image quality, the HP Deskjet 5440 Photo Printer was designed to print photos. In our tests, however, it performed more like a standard ink jet printer that also has some photocentric features. -PC Magazine

The Lexmark Z611 ink jet printer costs $29.99 direct; a set of cartridges for it costs $39.98 direct. With prices like these, the Z611 is a tempting choice if you need an essentially disposable printer for decidedly light-duty home use or to fill in during an emergency. -PC Magazine

The Canon Pixma iP4200 Photo Printer ($129.99 direct) represents an evolutionary step forward from the iP4000 and iP3000 that it replaces in Canon’s line. Compared with the iP4000, the iP4200 is less expensive, faster for business applications, and offers more longevity for photos. -PC Magazine

Every so often someone comes out with a printer that doesn’t fit well into the usual categories. The Ricoh Aficio G700 is the latest example. Although it’s technically an ink jet, in that it sprays ink directly on paper, it’s a new variation on ink jets. More important, the speed, quality, and price are much more in line with entry-level color lasers than with ink jets. All of this means its best fit is with the same small-office or heavy-duty home-office users who might otherwise choose a color laser. -PC Magazine

As an all-in-one printer, the Dell Photo AIO Printer 944 ($149 direct) is highly limited, with only three functions: scanning, copying, and printing. As a printer, however, it offers fast, high-quality photo output, along with reasonable speed and quality for text and graphics. -PC Magazine
