Kodak Hero 5.1 All-In-One 3D Printer Review
Kodak Hero 5.1 Printer Reviews

Kodak have released their latest multi-function printer on to the market, the Hero 5.1 which is packed with new features to compliment existing functions of copying, scanning, and 9600 dpi colour photo printing and 1200 x 1200 dpi text printing.

New this time is the ability to use Google Cloud Print™ enabled apps or Kodak Email Print to give access from your smartphone, tablet, and PC. The Kodak Pic Flick App lets you print photographs directly from your iPad, iPhone, or Android device. Most printer manufacturers have introduced wireless connection technology for simillar services recently.

With dimensions of 380 x 420 x 180 mm, the Hero 5.1 occupies a larger desk footprint than recent Epson SX models. The new machine features a 2.4 inch colour LCD screen, a memory card reader that auto detects, two sided automatic printing, and 40 sheet paper tray. There is no document feeder, second paper tray or fax facility that are found on higher models in the Hero range.

A smart sensor automatically identifies which paper size and print mode that is required. There is also a sort feature to find files on your memory card by date order on the LCD screen. Simillar to some of the latest HP printers you can create graph and lined paper.

Kodak Home Centre Software enables you to print 3D pictures with the Hero range of printers. Firstly you need to take a still picture of a static object, then move 3 inches to one side and take another picture. You then upload both images to the Home Centre Software to create and print the 3D image. A Four paper 3D glasses are available fromthe Kodak store for £3.99.

Kodak's main selling point has been cheap running costs, ie. low cost ink cartridges. This may be true when comparing prices with for example certain HP, Lexmark, and Canon cartridges, however there are much cheaper options out there. Printers with cartridges that can be refilled or ones that can use compatible cartridges will save much more money. The problem is Kodak printers will stop you from printing with a refilled cartridge, and compatible versions are not currently available. This model also uses new lower capacity, lower yield printer cartridges called 30 Black and 30CL Colour. They are availabe for around £20 per pair. The 30XL Black which print 2x the amount of pages can be purchased for £11.99.

The Kodak Hero 5.1 printer is packed with features and overall colour photographic and text print quality is good. On the surface the machine looks a decent buy, but we would never recommend a printer that uses cartridges that cannot be refilled and re-used. Kodak printers can also suffer from blocked print head nozzles which shortens their service life. For these reasons we think this printer is just OK!
