Epson Stylus SX438W Wireless Printer Review
Epson Stylus SX438W Printer

The recent trend has been for printers to be housed in a black, grey, or silver plastic chassis. The new Epson Stylus SX438W transports us back in time by using a refreshing white plastic case.

As with current multi-function models from Epson, the overall size of the machine has been reduced for environmental and space reasons. Epson realised that desk space can be limited plus the need to reduce the carbon impact of its products. Fortunately all features have been retained from previous larger models and we are left we a sleek, more attractive machine.

Another benefit of the new range of printers form Epson is the Wireless capability. No USB cable is required and set-up can be automatic. More importantly for Ipad and tablet mobile users, this printer is compatible and features the iPrint application which allows you to print on the go. A major reason why many users are upgrading to newer machines of late.

Print speeds, as usual, are slower than there reported 15 pages per minute, but adequate for normal home and very small business use. Print quality is also fine for most users.

The SX438W has memory card slots that allow users to directly view images via the 3.6cm LCD colour screen and then print them without the need of a PC or Mac. There are inputs for a memory stick, SD and Micro SD, MMC, Duo and Pro amongst others.

The good news for bargain hunters is that compatible and refillable cartridges are available for this model. The print heads with a resolution of 5760 x 1440 use a four cartridge system with a choice of either T1281-4 inks, or the higher capacity and more expensive T1291-4 refills. The refillable cartridges with ARC (auto reset chips) are now on their second chip version and have been fully tested to work with this model. They can be filled with either dye or pigment ink.

The rear paper tray holds between 80 and 100 sheets of A4 paper. Sliders can be adjusted to allow the use of various paper sizes and envelopes down to 9x13cm. The CIS flat bed colour scanner has a resolution of 1200x2400dpi and produces acceptable results for everyday use.

Overall a decent low price offering from Epson aimed at the infrequent to modest printer user. We would not recommend this unit for regular business use as the unit is not built for industrial use. OK for home users to print the occasional photograph and billing information though!
