DCP-J315W Printer Review
Housed in an attractive black case, the Brother DCP-J315W printer can copy, scan, print, and has Wireless and USB connectivity. No Ethernet network option with this model though.
Unlike the cheaper DCP-J115 printer model, the DCP-J315W has a 4.8cm colour LCD screen that can be used to view images from your memory cards which slot into the media card centre which is located on the front of the printer. The paper tray which holds up to 100 sheets of A4 sized paper goes below this and provides a resting place for up to 50 sheets of printed media.
Brother multifunction printers are normally aimed towards the small office market and are best suited to work related tasks. The DCP-J315W however has the added benefit of being capable of producing lab quality photographs that can last up to 100 years with the 6000x1200dpi print resolution. Brother also provides bundled software called Facefilter that allows you to adjust skin tones and red eye.
The scanner has a resolution of 1200x2400dpi, allowing you to capture the finest detail from scanned images. There is also an Optical Character Recognition feature that scans text on to a document so that you do not have to re-type it!
The Brother DCP-J315W uses the LC-985 series of cartridges. LC-985BK Black, LC-985C Cyan, LC-985M Magenta, and LC-985 Yellow. Although the capacity of these printer cartridges is lower than older type Brother Inks, their capacity still compares well against other manufacturers. Most importantly the cartridges do not contain a smart chip, and compatible versions of the LC985 cartridges are already available, meaning this machine is cheap to run!
Similar to other printer manufacturers, Brother takes environmental issues very seriously. The DCP-J315W has achieved Energy Star and Blue Angel environmental standards, has low power consumption, uses non hazardous materials, and has a recycle friendly design.
The Brother DCP-J315W is relatively quiet in operation and offers healthy print speeds with decent print quality. As with many Brother Machines they are made for business use, but the DCP-J315W offers the added bonus of a colour LCD screen and memory card slots. Photographic quality does not compare with the Canon MG5250, but this Brother machine is cheaper to buy and maintain. It is also built to handle larger volumes of printing. For this reason we would recommend this machine to small (home) office users who do not require a fax facility but need to print the occasional photograph.
Update: Refillable cartridges are now available for this machine. Very large capacity versions that hold 80ml of Ink and pretrude from the front of the machine offer a continuous printing solution. There are also smaller versions available that allow for the front cartridge door to be closed. Either type work well with this machine.
